Elsie and the Ghostly Goat
ELSIE AND THE GHOSTLY GOAT
Halloween night was the night old Maine farms came alive with memories.
And Elsie had just heard about Elmer—
the ghostly goat who had once lived in her barn
and returned every Halloween.
Unfortunately, Elsie had forgotten to shut the barn door.
Her chickens were counting on her to keep them safe.
Elsie grabbed her stuffed sheepdog Cody, and a flashlight.
“You’ve always made me feel safe,” she whispered to Cody.
She hugged him tight.
“There’s no such thing as ghostly goats.”
Off they went to shut the barn door.
Step...
step...
step.
A scary shadow loomed.
Elsie flashed her light.
Gone.
“Just a tree.”
Step ...
Step ...
“WHO COOKS FOR YOU?”
Elsie froze.
Then she spotted a barred owl in the tree.
“Just an owl.”
Step...
step...
step.
Something crooked waited beside the barn.
Elsie laughed at what her flashlight revealed.
“Just the wheelbarrow!”
At last, she reached the barn.
No ghosts.
No goats.
Just sleepy chickens.
THUNK!
Elsie shut the door.
“We did it!”
She skipped home, hugging Cody.
“See? There’s no such thing as ghostly goats.”
Behind her came a soft—
“Maaaaaaa.”
Elsie stopped.
“Just the wind.
Right, Cody?”
